Nestled in the undulating landscapes of the Nablus Governorate, the Palestinian village of Burqa whispers tales of antiquity. Its roots trace back through the epochs, as evidenced by remnants of late Roman, Byzantine, and Early Muslim eras unearthed in its sacred soil. Embraced by the ancient olive groves and perched on a terrace overlooking the basin of Sebustieh, Burqa has weathered the passage of time with resilience.
Incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1517, Burqa emerged as a haven of coexistence, housing a harmonious blend of Greek Christians and Muslims. Edward Robinson's poetic description in 1838 paints a picture of a sprawling village on the northern ridge, where cactus hedges guard the gardens and a large threshing-floor anchors the heart of the settlement.
The British Mandate era unfolded with census records capturing the tapestry of Burqa's diverse population—Muslims and Christians sharing the contours of their lives. Transitioning through Jordanian rule after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Burqa then found itself under Israeli occupation post the Six-Day War in 1967. The village endured territorial adjustments, witnessing the establishment and subsequent evacuation of the Israeli settlement of Homesh.
Amidst the historical narrative, Burqa continues to evolve. In 2017, a women's center, a testament to resilience and empowerment, was erected with the support of UN Women and Norway. The center, named after Dalal Mughrabi, a Palestinian woman with a complex history, stands as a symbol of the village's journey—bearing witness to both challenges and triumphs.
Burqa's story, etched in the contours of its olive groves and stone-laden history, unfolds with every passing breeze, inviting all to ponder the profound tapestry of time woven into the fabric of this resilient Palestinian village.
