Farmer - Muhammad Tahir Yasin (read about him below 👇)

Asira ash-Shamaliya, a Palestinian town nestled in the rolling hills of the Nablus Governorate, has a rich history that spans centuries. The town's name, meaning "firewood" in Arabic, speaks to the once-abundant forests that provided a livelihood for its residents.

The land around Asira ash-Shamaliya has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by pottery sherds dating back to the Iron Age, Roman, Byzantine, and early Muslim eras. During the Crusader period in the 12th century, the town was known as Asine, a testament to its enduring presence in the region.

Under Ottoman rule, Asira ash-Shamaliya was part of the Jabal Sami district within the Nablus Sanjak. In the 1596 tax records, the town had a population of 19 households and 5 bachelors, all Muslim, who paid taxes on their agricultural products, such as wheat, barley, olives, and goats.

In the 19th century, Western travelers described Asira ash-Shamaliya as a considerable village with industrious inhabitants and well-built houses. The town was surrounded by gardens of fig and olive trees, a scene that remains familiar to this day.

During the British Mandate period, Asira ash-Shamaliya's population grew steadily, reaching 2,060 by 1945, all of whom were Muslim. The town's land, spanning over 30,000 dunams, was primarily used for agriculture, with a small portion dedicated to urban development.

Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and the 1949 Armistice Agreements, Asira ash-Shamaliya fell under Jordanian rule. After the Six-Day War in 1967, the town has been under Israeli occupation, with its land divided between Areas A, B, and C according to the 1995 accords.

Today, Asira ash-Shamaliya is home to approximately 8,813 Palestinians who continue to cultivate the land and preserve the town's rich heritage. The ancient olive groves that surround the town serve as a reminder of the generations who have called this place home, and the enduring connection between the people and the land.
